Claws and Teeth

Throughout our long evolutionary history, we cats have developed a highly sophisticated system for keeping out intruders. For example, when I’m on patrol, I leave behind facial pheromones to mark my territory. Compare this to humans who reserve sun loungers by placing towels on them...

While I’m out and about, I also leave visible scratch marks on trees to show how fit and strong I am! Finally, I spray urine at strategic points around the perimeter to alert potential intruders to my presence. Well, if you find this a little unorthodox, I’m afraid you’ve rather got me there.

Take No Prisoners

Anyone who has the nerve to ignore these signs will receive special treatment. On a basic level, this involves the classic arched back and flattened ears. If that’s not enough, the next level adds a strong hissing. Level three is a red alert, meaning “take no prisoners.” The intruder will face the full force of our claws and teeth.

These procedures send a clear message: Uninvited guests aren’t welcome here. Unlike other mammals, we felines have done the math. The more competitors there are, the fewer mice will be left for each of us!
